AAU Ice Hockey prepares for 2014-2015

Our best season yet!

Clearly, going into the 2014-2015 season our AAU Ice Hockey programs are in a vastly different condition than they were leading into past seasons.

Only four years ago, the entire AAU Ice Hockey consisted nationally of a Scholastic program within New York state. Then three years ago the Hockey Michigan (then with only mites) and the United Hockey Union (juniors) programs were formed.

Since then our Mite, Squirt, Peewee, Junior and Scholastic programs are all spreading nation-wide. We seen the creation of Junior, Mite and Squirt National Championships. And last season we saw the creation of our new dedicated national website at: www.aauicehockey.org.

MOUNTAIN EXPOS AAU GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPS

The Mountain Expos 13U Black baseball team won the AAU Grand National championship Sunday in Orlando.

The Expos beat Orlando's Team Elite, 5-4, in nine innings thanks to a suicide squeeze play executed by Ethan Miller and Zack Edwards.

Jack Galbraith was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts in seven innings. Ivann Rodriguez pitched two innings.

The rest of the Expos are: Mac Gortney, Tim Mosso, Kye Andress, Luke Wood, Blake Gibson, Devin Dickens, Jordan Pendley and Caleb Franz.

The tournament began June 22 and was played in spring training facilities used by major league teams. The Expos went 5-1 in pool play and won nine of their 10 games altogether.

While they were in Orlando, the Expos were visited by Atlanta Braves first-round draft pick Braxton Davidson. The former Roberson standout is in Florida playing his first summer of pro baseball for the Gulf Coast League (Fla.) Braves rookies league team.

DAVIDSON MEETS UP WITH WNC YOUTH TEAM

Braxton Davidson agreed to a $1.7 million signing bonus with the Atlanta Braves last week, the second-richest contract for a Roberson baseball player in the history of the major league draft.

But let it be known, Davidson is still doing his part to help the sport's next generation in Western North Carolina.

The former Rams outfielder/pitcher spoke to congregated youth at Roberson's baseball camp in between signing and reporting to extended spring training in Orlando on Saturday.

Speaking of Orlando, Davidson met up with the Mountain Expos 13 and under team for encouragement and photos in Florida since the Expos are currently competing in the AAU Grand Nationals inside the Braves' spring training facilities.

Davidson was the 32nd overall selection in this year's MLB draft and the Gatorade state player of the year for all North Carolina private and public-school classifications. He shared the Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year award with North Buncombe senior Alex Destino.

The 2014 AAU Girls' Junior National Volleyball Championships

concluded in a big way on Monday and Tuesday as the 15, 16 and 17 divisions, along with the 18 Classic, finished up tournament play. The 15 and 17 Open and Premier Championship Games took place on Monday, June 23rd with the 17 Premier teams kicking it off!

Ocala Power United 17 Rox and the Carolina Islanders 17 Elite faced off in the 17 Premier Championship Game trying to take home the crown. Carolina Islanders played their first game at 8AM on Monday morning and then played again at 9AM, 11AM and 3PM.

They won every game they played except for one match in pool play and the Championship Game itself, where they lost 25-16, 25-23. Ocala Power United 17 Rox won the game and the division, wrapping up the tournament where they went undefeated.
