XXXII
AAU
Junior Olympic Games

The XXXII AAU Junior Olympic Games came to the Hampton Roads Virginia area and for the first time, Inline Hockey was run as an official medal sport at the games after two years as an exhibition sport. Medals were awarded in two age divisions 12U and 14U and the sport saw 24 teams compete for the first medals awarded.

Both divisions saw great action and the first Gold Medal went to the B.C. Warriors (Florida) in the 12U division with the Silver Medal going to Daytona Thunder (Daytona FL) and the Bronze to the Ocean State Hurricanes (Warwick RI).

The 14U division was dominated by the Ocean State Hurricanes (Warwick RI) who went undefeated in taking the Gold and players from that team still have records that are on the books. Ocean State beat the Daytona Thunder (Daytona FL) 7-0 in the Gold Medal game. The Bronze Medal game was won by the World Gym Warriors (Long Island NY) in overtime 5-4 over the BCW Cyclones (Florida).

Mike Picone (Johnston RI) of the Ocean St Hurricanes was named the first AAU Hockey Player Of The Year for his spectacular performance. The AAU also named Mike Picone as honoree of the Joel Ferrell Outstanding Performance Memorial Award. The Joel Ferrell Memorial Award is given to the athletes of the Junior Olympic Games that not only display outstanding athletic ability but displayed good sportsmanship and express the ideals of the Amateur Athletic Union. This is one of the highest honors an athlete at the Junior Olympic Games can obtain.
