The XXXIII AAU Junior Olympic Games added new age groups in the 16U and 18U divisions but will always be remembered as the JO Games of the Team Xtreme Hockey Club as they dominated the games taking the Gold Medal in the 14U, 16U, and the 18U divisions.
In the 12U division the Rollerblade Rage (Florida) defended their Gold Medal from 1998 by defeating the Mass Rage (Leominster, MA) 7-2. The Bronze Medal game saw the Celina Bad Dogs (Celina OH) defeat the Lauderhill Roller Bandits (Lauderhill, FL) 5-4 where the Bad dogs had to win 2 games in overtime in the playoffs including an overtime shootout to advance . The 12U MVP award went to Scott Halpern (Rollerblade Rage).
The 14U division saw Team Xtreme defeat the Lauderhill Roller Bandits (Lauderdale FL) 11-4 to win the Gold and the Bronze went to World Gym Warriors (Long Island NY) as they defeated the Hockeytowne Wings (Dayton) 8-0. The 14U MVP was Alan Jackson (Team Xtreme).
The 16U division was the rematch between the World Gym Warriors (Long Island, NY) and Team Xtreme (Cleveland, OH) where in round robin play the Warriors handed Xtreme their only loss of the tournament 4-3. The Gold Medal game was a great one and was pretty even as Team Xtreme held a 3-1 lead at the half with both goalies making fantastic saves to keep their teams in the game but in the second half Xtreme put 6 unanswered goals on the board in the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half to end the game by mercy rule and take the first 16U Gold Medal. The Bronze Medal went to the US Blades (W. Bloomfield, MI) as they defeated the Labeda Cobras (Coral Springs FL) 3-2. Goalie Justin Wolf (Cleveland, OH) of Team Xtreme was named MVP.
The 18U division was one of domination as the Team Xtreme (Cleveland OH) team invoked the 8 goal mercy rule in every game. Silver Medal went to the Mongols (Elyria OH) who's only losses came at the hands of Team Xtreme. The Bronze Medal went to the Lauderhill Roller Bandits (Lauderhill, FL) as they defeated Black Biscuit (Pittsburgh PA) 8-1. The 18U MVP was Dave Roberts (Solon, OH) who scored an amazing 29pts in the tournament.
The AAU Player Of the Year went to Alan Jackson (Akron OH) of Team Xtreme who was named to the All-American team in the 14U, 16U, and 18U age divisions. Alan was also honored by the AAU with the Joel Ferrell Outstanding Performance Memorial Award which is one of the highest honors the AAU gives to an athlete at the Junior Olympic Games.
