RECAP: AAU SPRING FLING II
That's a wrap for the AAU Spring Fling II weekend! It was a great tournament that included some very special guests from the WNBA.
The Chicago Sky, Minnesota Lynx, Phoenix Mercury and the Indiana Fever joined AAU members at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports for a WNBA Preseason tournament. This event included two games on Friday night, the first between Chicago and Indiana, followed by Minnesota and Phoenix. Chicago and Minnesota won their games, earning them spots in the Championship game on Sunday afternoon. Phoenix and Indiana battled it out on Sunday morning in the consolation game, which Indiana won 75-60.
Anticipation was high for the Championship game, with Elena Delle Donne and her Chicago Sky team battling it out against last year's WNBA National Champions, the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx dominated for most of the game, but Chicago never gave up, cutting a double digit lead to just seven when the clock ran out. The final score was Lynx 76, Sky 69.
After the game, WNBA President Laurel Richie presented the Minnesota Lynx with the WNBA Preseason tournament trophy.
The WNBA stars weren't the only ones who had championship games on Sunday. 29 AAU teams were awarded trophies, WNBA autographed basketballs and tournament tee shirts. Some of the WNBA players even dropped by to help hand out the awards!
Along with several coaches clinics, player panels and autograph sessions, this weekend's AAU Spring Fling II tournament was a huge success and we already can't wait until next year!

AAU SULLIVAN FOOTBALL NOMINEES SELECTED IN 2014 NFL DRAFT

The nineteen 84th Annual Sullivan Award nominees proved to be an excellent group, both for their accomplishments in their sport and their communities. Four of the nineteen nominees were college football players, including the winner of the AAU Sullivan Award, John Urschel. All four college football athletes were selected in the 2014 NFL Draft.
John Urschel, the winner of the 2013 AAU Sullivan Award, was chosen in the 5th round as the 175th pick overall by the Baltimore Ravens. The offensive guard was the team captain at Penn State and was obtaining his master's degree in Math with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Blake Bortles, quarterback at the University of Central Florida, was drafted third overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bortles had a great season, leading his team to the Fiesta Bowl, UCF's first bowl game appearance. In the Fiesta Bowl, Bortles and his Knights upset the Baylor Bears, notching their first BCS Bowl victory in school history and making UCF the youngest football program to ever win a BCS Bowl game.
Quarterback of the Alabama Crimson Tide, AJ McCarron, was picked in the fifth round as the 164th overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals. In his senior year at Alabama, he was the recipient of the Maxwell Award, which recognizes the college football player of the year, and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The Alabama team captain finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting and had a 36-4 record in 40 career starts.
Last but certainly not least, Tre Mason of the Auburn Tigers was chosen in the third round as the 75th overall pick by the St. Louis Rams. The senior running back was a Heisman Trophy finalist and broke the SEC-high rushing yardage total. He set the school single-season records for all-purpose yards and rushing touchdowns and won SEC Offensive Player of the Year. He capped off his spectacular senior year with 195 rushing yards versus the Florida State Seminoles, the most ever for a running back in a BCS Championship Game.
Congratulations to John Urschel, Blake Bortles, AJ McCarron and Tre Mason and we can’t wait to see what your NFL future holds! |
SULLIVAN AWARD NOMINEES SEND THANK YOU LETTERS
The AAU Sullivan Award is only given to one outstanding amateur athlete annually, but all nominees receive an AAU medallion for their nomination. A few of our nominees expressed their gratitude in thank you notes to the Chairman of the AAU Sullivan Award Committee, William Brown. You can find the thank you notes from powerlifting nominee, Robert Herbst, and Olympic swimmer, Katie Ledecky, below.
Dear William,
Thank you for the Beautiful Medallion for the 2014 James E. Sullivan Award. I received it after a particularly hard session of training and rehabilitation and it served as the type of inspiration I needed (please excuse my handwriting, but I am rehabbing from two elbow surgeries this winter and still do not have full use of my hand).
During the nomination process, many people told me that I was an inspiration to them to become more active so that they could be fitter or engage in sports. I hope that I can continue to be a positive role model and, in turn, I will look to the example of James E. Sullivan and what the Sullivan Award stands for as my own source of motivation.
Yours in sport,
Robert
Dear Mr. Brown,
Thank you for sending me the 2013 Medallion awarded to me as a nominee for the 84th Annual AAU Sullivan Award. I was very pleased to receive it and feel honored to have been nominated for the prestigious award. Please share my gratitude with your committee. I very much appreciate the recognition associated with the nomination for the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award. Many, many thanks.
Kind regards,
Katie Ledecky |
FIRST NATIONS AAU TOURNAMENT BRINGS OPPORTUNITY TO YOUNG ATHLETES
The First Nations National Basketball Championships are coming to South Dakota on June 10-12! This event will feature AAU members in 10U, 14U and 18U divisions. Great Plains First Nations AAU Representative, Derrick McCauley, wrote a thank you note to the AAU for hosting this event and giving Native Americans the opportunity to showcase their skills. He briefly mentions Shoni and Jude Schimmel, two sisters who play women's basketball at the University of Louisville. They were both nominated for the 84th Annual Sullivan Award and are very active in the Native American community.
You can read McCauley's letter below.
Basketball has always played a huge part in the reservation boundaries from ordinary high school games to back yard three point contests among siblings. The term "rez ball" is an unorthodox style of free-wheeling, non-hesitant, this day in age counting coup. Counting Coup was a form of bravery that the Great Plains Indians proved during battle. Instead of killing their enemies, they would tap them on the head or body during battle to show their courage. This form of courage demonstrated by our ancestors still lives within our souls as Native Americans. AAU gives our kids the opportunity to excel in a sport that we have always been comfortable in. Go to any reservation and hear the stories of the past role models and great basketball players that didn't make it due to lack of resources or moral support. We have an opportunity to open the door for some of these kids in the sport and although some might be hesitant to take that change, we could give a big shout out to Shoni and Jude Schimmel and all the other Native American athletes across the country that found success walking through that door.
Pidamayedo (Thank You),
Derrick McCauley
Great Plains First Nations AAU Representative

LOCAL JUNIOR GOLFERS CAN PLAY IN AAU QUALIFIER IN JUNE
Originally posted on The Anniston Star by AL Muskewitz
Junior golfers in and around Calhoun County will have a chance to play for a shot at a national championship right in their own backyard next month.
Cane Creek pro Kenny Szuch has signed on to offer his facility to host a 2014 AAU golf Super Regional qualifier June 23.
The event is open to boys and girls from all over the country between the ages of 13 and 18. Play will be staged in three age divisions (13-14, 15-16, 17-18) with the overall boys' and girls' winner earning a paid spot into the AAU National Championship July 17-20 at Link Hill CC in Greenville, Tenn.
Everyone who participates in the tournament is eligible to play in the nationals even if they don’t win here. It wouldn't be unlikely for some players to re-tee it here for the free shot after playing in a regional in Tennessee earlier in the week. It's because there is no other national qualifier in Alabama this can be called a Super Regional.
" I would think anybody who plays, no matter the caliber of play, there’s a great carrot dangling at the end of this," Szuch said. “I would highly encourage high school players who have any thought at all of playing after high school to play here and, whether you’re low or not, block off three or four days in July and play in the national championship.”
Szuch has been on board with the concept for a long time. He hosted the AAU national championship event in Knoxville in 2007. He has been talking about bringing a qualifier to Cane Creek for a while, but didn’t feel he had all the logistics in place.
"
I didn’t feel I could do it unless we did it right," he said. "I think it has an opportunity to turn into a really big event because … college coaches look at these things."
"I love doing events for the kids, but everywhere I’ve been there was tons of juniors golf. For some reason, this area, there's not that many playing; they play other sports. I’m hoping doing an event like this, it'll spark some interest. I would think any current (high school) player or anybody wanting to try out for high school, this is a perfect opportunity to see how you stack up against local competition."
Entry fee for the event is $60 a player, which includes AAU registration, and the field is limited to the first 96 players. In the run-up to the tournament, Szuch is offering unlimited practice rounds and a $40 player/parent special.
Registration forms are available at the Cane Creek pro shop. Deadline for entries is June 20.
